CURRENCY
Currency
The currency unit is the peso ($ or CLP), which exists in banknotes of
$500, $1000, $2000, $5.000, $10.000 and $20.000, and metallic coins of
$1, $5, $10, $50, $100 and $500. The check is a honored commercial
document, and in general, they are received when the issuer has been
identified.
Money Exchange: Money may be exchanged at some airports, hotels, banks
and money exchange offices. The best rates are usually found in money
exchange offices. These are located in the downtown areas of most major
cities. In Santiago they are found in Providencia and in the main
shopping centers. Changing money in the streets is not advisable.
Credit cards
Credit cards are widely used and accepted. There is no surcharge for
their use. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa, Master Card and
Diners Club. In medium to large businesses, American Express is also
honored. Exchange rates for credit cards are quite good. Most small,
rural towns have cash economies, so have cash handy when going out of
the beaten path.
Teller Machines
In commercial and banking areas, it is easy to find automatic teller
machines (Redbanc network) honoring cards of every local bank, as well
as Cirrus cards, everyday and 24 hours a day. Exchange rates are very
good.
