LAS PIZARRAS CHARDONNAY 2015 & VIÑEDO CHADWICK 2014: BEST WINES SCORED IN TIM ATKIN MW CHILE’S REPORT

In Chile 2017 Special Report recently published by Tim Atkin MW, UK critic chose Las Pizarras Chardonnay 2015 as Chile’s Best White Wine with 97 points, while Viñedo Chadwick 2014 rose as the best ranked red wine and also best ranked wine above more than 730 wines tasted by Atkin.

Furthermore, in Atkin’s 2017 Chile Classification detailed in his report, he placed Viña Errázuriz and Viñedo Chadwick in the most prestigious category named “First Growths”.

The wines tasted by Tim Atkin MW with their outstanding scores and reviews are detailed below:

Viñedo Chadwick 2014, 98 points

“This brilliant Maipo Cabernet comes from a vineyard in Puente Alto, planted in 1999. There were only 480 cases made in 2014 (just over half the usual amount) so demand for this wine has been high. It’s a wonderfully subtle, nuanced, textured wine with floral, almost Lafitelike grace and poise.”

Las Pizarras Chardonnay 2015, 97 points

“Francisco Baettig thinks this is the best wine he’s ever made and I’m inclined to agree, as it sets a new benchmark for South American Chardonnay. Savoury, focused and stylishly oaked, with notes of lemon zest and baking spices, it wouldn’t look out of place in a line up of Grands Crus Burgundies.”

Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2014 – 96 points

“Made as a blend since 2004, this is still Cabernet Sauvignon-based, with Carmenère, Malbec and Petit Verdot for company. It’s a wonderfully elegant, silky cuvée with floral, fineboned flavours of graphite, red plum and blackcurrant, bright acidity and very subtle oak. Deceptively forward, it will age well in bottle.”

Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2015, 95 points

“The latest release of this brilliant coastal Pinot Noir is every bit as exciting as the 2014. Grown on metamorphic soils, it has a texture and grip that are reminiscent of Central Otago. Sleek red fruit flavours of raspberry and pomegranate are supplemented by pepper and vanilla spice and a focused, tapering finish.”

Aconcagua Costa Syrah 2014, 94 points

“One of a series of very impressive wines from Errázuriz’s Aconcagua Costa project, this is youthful, perfumed and stylish, with bright acidity, textured tannins and bramble and tapenade notes embellished by subtle oak. Wonderfully drinkable Syrah.”

Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay 2015, 94 points

“The Manzanar Vineyard is located just 8 miles from the Pacific and it shows in the focus and freshness of this impressive Chardonnay from Francisco Baettig. Saline, subtle and gently oaked, with 50% malolactic for extra texture supported by crunchy acidity.”

Aconcagua Costa Pinot Noir 2015, 93 points

“Picked early for freshness and aged in old wood to preserve its fruit character, this blend of 777 and 916 clones has lovely sap, zip and focus, with ferrous, grippy tannins, a hint of good reduction and floral, succulent red fruits.”

The Red Collection White 2015, 91 points

“This is the fifth vintage of this attractive, Rhône-style blend of Marsanne with 26% Roussanne and 14% Viognier. The reduced percentage of Viognier has improved the balance here, allowing the pear, vanilla and honeysuckle flavours freer rein.”

Max Reserva Syrah 2014, 91 points

“Bigger, riper and more tannic than the winery’s Aconcagua Costa Syrah, this shows more oak and extraction. It’s impressive enough, with plenty of ripe dark berry fruit, smoky oak and plenty of structure, but not quite as refined as its stable mate.”
